3 Muhammad Khairulamin bin Abdullah, a lecturer from IHS, attended the S3 simulation conference at Academia Singapore from 31st October to 4th November 2017. The conference was co-organised by SingHealth Duke-NUS Institute of Medical Singapore, USA. The theme of the conference was “Bringing the world of medical simulation together”. During the conference, he presented a research paper titled “Flipped classroom in simulation-based learning” and held a workshop on “Approach to integrate flipped classroom in simulation-based learning”. The workshop was jointly facilitated with his collaborator, Dr Choayan Dong from Sengkang Health, SingHealth Singapore. He also had the opportunity to visit three simulation centres: JurongHealth Simulation and Clinical Education Centre, Sengkang Health Simulation Centre and SingHealth Duke-NUS Institute of Medical Simulation Centre. The conference was fruitful and provided him with a platform to enrich his simulation knowledge and skill, simulation perspective, networking, collaboration, and more importantly, increased the visibility of PAPRSB Institute of Health Sciences UBD’s simulation centre and its activities to other simulation users, network and society. More information on the IHS SimCentre can be found at: http://ihs.ubd.edu.bn/simcentre/ In November 2017, a legal agreement between AHA and IHS UBD was signed, which recognized IHS UBD as one of the centres certified to conduct AHA training courses, namely Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) as well as First Aid. The recognition as AHA International Training Centre is yet another important milestone for IHS UBD in an effort to elevate its reputation and increase its visibility by offering international training courses. The journey started in Bangkok in 2013 at a SUNmeeting conference (Simulation User Network) with an informal discussion with the then AHA regional director who was also one of the conference delegates. Although the journey had not been smooth-sailing, finally in April 2017, the new AHA Regional Director paid a visit to IHS UBD in order to conduct site assessment, leading to a recommendation for IHS UBS to apply for certification as AHA International Training Centre and its eventual certification. American Heart Association (AHA) is a non-profit organization based in the USA, which fosters appropriate cardiac care in an effort to reduce disability and deaths caused by cardiovascular disease and stroke. It offers globally accepted certified BLS, ACLS, PALS and First Aid training courses through its published guidelines for CPR and Emergency Cardiac Care. Currently, IHS UBD has five AHA certified BLS instructors. Three BLS training sessions had so far been conducted with 49 participants being certified. Planning is underway to conduct more training sessions in 2018, not only focusing on BLS, but also ACLS, PALS and First Aid provider courses. IHS UBD aims to train a minimum of 500 participants per year as a set target and requirement from AHA for all International Training Centers. In order to cope with this demand, more instructors need to be trained for each training discipline, with plans for instructorship training to be conducted in the near future. At the back of this certification, the Training Centre Coordinator, Muhammad Khairulamin bin Abdullah, would like to express his deepest gratitude to the Dean of IHS, Dr Hjh Rafidah binti Hj Gharif, and former Dean Datin Paduka Dr Hjh Maslina Hj Mohsin, Deputy Dean Associate Professor Dr Anne Catherine Cunningham, former Deputy Deans Dk Dr Hjh Nurolaini binti Pg Hj Muhammad Kifli, Dr Suwarni binti Hj Mohd Diah and Rozita Hj Tamin, and the BLS teams: Agong Lupat, Rozita Hj Tamin, Asnah binti Haji Yusof and Dk Noraffizah Pg Salleh who were all involved during the four years strenuous journey to finally become certified AHA International Training Centre. Without their support, endless effort and strong faith, this endeavor will not be materialized.
