T O D E C . 2 0 1 8 | I S S U E 1 5The Medical and Health Services, Combat ServiceSupport (CSS), Royal Brunei Land Forces (RBLF)and PAPRSB Institute of Health Sciences (IHS),UBD co-organised the 2nd Medical and HealthSymposium in conjunction with the 24thCooperation Afloat Readiness and Training(CARAT) Exercise on the 15th of November 2018. Participants of the 2nd Medical and Health Symposium during thethe keynote speech “Civilian-Military Interoperability in MedicalEmergencies” by Lt Geoff Burgerhoff from United States Navy(USN) on the 15th of November 2018The one-day symposium was held at the PAPRSB IHS,UBD, and attracted more than 200 participants fromvarious agencies, including RBAF (Royal Brunei ArmedForces), PAPRSB IHS, Politeknik Brunei and IBTE(Institute of Brunei Technical Education), Ministry ofHealth, Royal Brunei Police Force, Prisons Department,Brunei Fire and Rescue Department, Jerudong ParkMedical Centre and Panaga Health Centre. Themed “Pre-Hospital Medical Emergencies”, thesymposium aimed to promote collaboration amongstvarious agencies in Brunei Darussalam to enhanceinteroperability in medical emergencies. Key themesdiscussed included: "Combat Medic Experience in theWarzone", "Trauma Assessment", "Dental Trauma","Tactical Combat Casualty Care", and "CardiacEmergencies". Participants also had the opportunity towitness a demonstration of tactical combat casualtycare by US Navy and RBAF and trauma assessment bythe EMAS (Emergency Medical and Ambulance Service)team from Ministry of Health. Participants alsoexperienced a hands-on session of simulated cardiacresuscitation led by the simulation team at PAPRSB IHS. Dr. Nurolaini Pg Haji Muhd Kifli, Senior AssistantProfessor at the PAPRSB Institute of HealthSciences (IHS), UBD participated in the 5th GulfCooperation Council (GCC) Pharmacy Congress,Dubai from the 11th to the 13th of October 2018. The Congress aims to promote leadership skills andnetworking. Recent advances in pharmacy,technology trend awareness and quality of care inpatients were also discussed. Around 200participants comprising pharmacy managers,technicians, residents, trainees, ambulatorypharmacists, community pharmacist, and academicsattended the Congress with the theme “AdvancingPharmacy Practice in the Region”. The top 3 highest scoring abstracts received awardsin recognition of excellence in the field of patientcare during the Congress. Dr. Nurolaini was awardedfirst prize for her research and presentation on“The Extent of Medicine Wastages in a TertiaryHospital in Brunei – 10-year Retrospective Studyfrom 2006 to 2016” at the 5th GCC PharmacyCongress. This Congress has been a great platformfor Dr. Nurolaini to discover innovation in clinicalpharmacy services in Gulf countries’ hospitals. Shealso gained insights into the latest technologies andpharmacy automation in the Gulf countries and heldproductive discussions with internationalpharmacists, besides networking with potentialcollaborators for student exchange programmes.Dk.
