Those on this list (in alphabetical order) are Ahmed, Minhaz Uddin; Arai, Takaomi; Azad, Abul K.;Chou Chau, Yuan Fong; Grafe, Ulmar T; Khan, Mohammad Mansoob; Koh, David; and Slik, J. W. The presenceof 8 UBD academics in this list is a testimony that research talent is nutured, supported and recognised inour university. Professor Koh, when approached for his views of this list, commented: “This is welcome news for UBD. Thepresence of 8 UBD scientists on this list shows what our academics can achieve, and the commitment anddrive for research excellence in UBD. It also clearly demonstrates the breadth and depth of research talentin UBD, and importantly, it shows that younger mid-career staff, and not only senior professors can make itto the list.” U B D A C A D E M I C S N A M E D A M O N G T O P 2 %S C I E N T I S T S I N T H E W O R L D 2Distinguished Professor David Koh has made the top 2%scientists in the world who have high impact citationduring their career, up to and within 2019, according to ananalysis published in PLoS Biology. Congratulations! A group from Stanford Universityexamined databases of standardized citationmetrics across all scientists and scientificdisciplines, and provided the list in a PLoS Biologypublication which appeared in Oct 2020 [1]. Theyassessed scientists for career-long citation impactup until the end of 2019, and for citation impactduring the single calendar year 2019.Three current UBD Professors are on the top 2% listfor career-long citation impact – DistinguishedProfessor David Koh from the PAPRSB Institute ofHealth Sciences, and Professors Ulmar Grafe andTakaomi Arai from the Faculty of Science. These 3professors are also on the list of top 2% of scientistswith citation impact during the single calendar year2019, showing that they continue to be researchdriven and active. Prof. Koh's career-long citation impact haspositioned him at no. 165 and no. 179 (includingand excluding self-citations, respectively). Prof. Koh's citation impact in 2019 has alsopositioned him at no. 186 and no. 183 (includingand excluding self-citations, respectively). Both rankings have placed him within a total of12,252 scientists who share his field, andpositioned Prof. David in global top 2% scientistsof his field. Congratulations are in order for Brunei, UBDand IHS and FOS colleagues. Without theirsupport and commitment towards researchexcellence, and a conducive researchenvironment, all this would not have happened. We are confident that given the trajectory ofresearch development, more IHS and UBD staffcan be in the top 2% list in the future.
