T O M A R . 2 0 1 9 | I S S U E 1 6His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Omar 'AliSaifuddien Sa'adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam visited the PAPRSBInstitute of Health Sciences (IHS) in Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) on the 18th of February 2019.Accompanying His Majesty on the visit were the Vice Chancellor of UBD Datin Dr Hajah Anita BinurulZahrina Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Wijaya Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Abdul Aziz and Minister of EducationYang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Hamzah Haji Sulaiman. Also present were senior governmentofficials and principal officers from UBD. His Majesty's tour began with the Simulation Centre (PAPRSB IHS Extension Building), which provideshands-on training to students to cover various clinical scenarios. The centre was established 5 years agoand features a general ward, an operating theatre, a critical care centre, labour and neonatal area, aswell as emergency and medical centres. It also houses computer-controlled High Fidelity Mannequins totrain students in emergency cases and Low Fidelity Mannequins for basic training. The centre also runsworkshops which cover a variety of clinical scenarios such as Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS),airway management, analysing electrocardiogram (ECG), obstetric and paediatric settings.Demonstrations at the Medical Surgical Bay for trauma management with high fidelity mannequins and asimulated patient were also performed by students from IHS and Politeknik Brunei. In addition, studentsalso demonstrated the process of Operation Theatre training for nurses. The Children's Bay and the Maternity Bay also demonstrated nursing care (with a child’s mannequin)forasthma attack, and training of midwives by simulating a scenario of a woman in labour, respectively.The American heart Association (AHA) International Training Centre at IHS also exhibited its CPR andBasic Life Support (BLS) training courses. Accredited by the AHA in January last year, PAPRSB IHS islicensed to provide AHA-certified Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)and Paediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) courses as well as conduct first-aid and heart-savertraining. A total of 504 participants across various healthcare professions and members of the generalpublic were trained in BLS and ACLS courses at PAPRSB IHS in 2018. Graduate students (Biomedical Science programme) briefed His Majesty on current projects, which rangefrom investigating gene expression in Brunei's cancer patients, the use of C. elegans worms to studyhuman diseases to the 3D protein structure of cytochrome P450. Meanwhile, students in thepharmaceutical manufacturing lab performed tablet dissolution and tablet hardness test, and illustratedthe functions of the fluidized bed dryer, friabilator apparatus and tablet punching apparatus. His Majestyalso had the opportunity to observe a Microbiology practical session with Year 4 Biomedical Sciencestudents, prior to a clinical skills demonstration which involved UBD medical students as well asPoliteknik Brunei and IBTE nursing students. UBD has been recognised by the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Asian University Rankings as a "very high"research intensive university, which places it on the same level as other top universities in the world. Itcontinues to focus on impactful research which have academic and economic relevance to nationaldevelopment, in alignment with Brunei Vision 2035 (Wawasan Brunei 2035).
