This year we mark the final 6 graduates from our Masters in PrimaryHealth Care (MSc PHC) Programme. This was the first graduate programme in the faculty - a 3year part-time programme (starting in Jan 2004) and built on a successful post graduatediploma in Primary Health Care which was developed in conjunction with St. George’sUniversity of London, UK. Twenty four general practitioners (GPs) graduated with a post graduate diploma (including ourDean) and a further 65 GPs have successfully graduated with an MSc PHC (including our veryown Dr. Hjh Fazean Irdayati Binti Hj Idris). These 89 GPs have changed the landscape ofprimary health care in Brunei. This programme has been superseded by our Master of Medicine(Cohort 1 started in Jan 2017 and are due to finish their programme this December) which haswidened out graduate training opportunities to other doctors in Brunei to the specialties ofAnaesthesiology, Critical Care Medicine, Emergency Medicine, General Internal Medicine,Occupational Medicine, Paediatrics, Primary Health Care, Psychiatry, Public Health, andSurgery. The programme currently has 39 doctors registered in Year 1, 2 or 3. B E Y O N D | J U L . T O S E P T . 2 0 1 9 | I S S U E 1 8 4 Graduate students (PhD) (Class of 2019) with their supervisors This achievement in Primary Health Care reflected the growing number of graduate studentsin the faculty. Master of Public Health (MPH) was the second taught programme in theFaculty. The first cohort started in August 2010 and the first batch of students graduated in2012. To date, 53 health professionals have graduated with MPH. The programme has movedwith the times and is now available in life-long learning mode. A further 12 healthprofessionals have taken modules from the programme since August 2018. Last year saw ourfirst recruitment to a new Masters of Nursing taught programme (August 2018), and to date,10 part time nurses are studying for this programme. The Nursing team has also developed aMasters of Advanced Clinical Practice (Senate approved, in its implementation phase). In terms of research students, our first PhD graduate was in 2016; this year we celebrate 6more PhD graduates (5 in Public Health, 1 in Biomedical Science). Many congratulationsstudents, for all your hard work and perseverance. This brings our PhD alumni up to 11, withanother 14 students registered on PhD programmes in the faculty. Our first Masters byresearch graduates were in 2013, and this year 4 more graduate (2 in Biomedical Science and2 in Nursing), bringing up our MHSc alumni to 17. There are another 19 registered Masters byResearch in Health Sciences on our programmes. In total, 170 graduate students have successfully completed their studies with the faculty, and106 are continuing their studies. This August, we welcomed 19 graduate students: 14 new MPHstudents (MPH as Graduate LifeLong Learning (12) and MPH by Coursework (2)), 4 MHScstudents (1 in Biomedical Science, 1 in Midwifery, 2 in Nursing) and 1 PhD student (Nursing). Many thanks to all our staff for contributing to our taught Masters programmes andsupervising graduate research students in the faculty – these individual achievements aresomething for everyone to be proud of.
