Masters Programme - UBD Institute of Health Sciences

The Master of Medicine (M.Med) at IHS introduces accredited, structured and certified training programmes for medical graduates who are undergoing Basic Specialty Training in Brunei Darussalam. The M.Med programme brings in 9 specialties: anaethesiology, critical care medicine, emergency medicine, general internal medicine, pediatrics, primary health care, psychiatry, public health and surgery. Its vision is to develop high quality and comprehensive training to graduates to become consultants in an effective, efficient, responsive, affordable, equitable and accessible manner.

The M.Med programme is carried out on a part-time basis and is delivered through a series of modules over the span of 3 years in block release mode (4 days each session, 5 sessions a year).

The programme leading to the Master of Nursing is conducted either 36 months full-time or 48 months part-time. Students of the Master of Nursing programme must select an area of specialisation. The areas of specialisation for the Master of Nursing are:

Primary Health Care
Accident & Emergency Care
Cancer, Palliative and Supportive Care

The student, to be considered for award of the Master of Nursing degree, needs to obtain a total of 64 modular credits (MCs) from core modules (52 MCs) and specialisation core modules (12 MCs).

The MPH programme offers relevant, high-value instruction, research and service aimed at enhancing the health of human populations. Its principal focus is on helping public health professionals acquire up-to-date generalist and specialist knowledge, skills and attitude required to effectively and efficiently address present and emerging local, regional and global public health challenges. The MPH programme consists of 3 main concentrations, which are (1) biostatistics and epidemiology, (2) community health nursing, and (3) health promotion.

The normal duration of the MPH programme is 18 months full time and 36 months part time.

The student, to be considered for award of the MPH degree, needs to obtain a total of 52 modular credits (MCs) from course modules, a practicum, and a research exercise. Of the 52 MCs, 20 are from core course modules, 12 from option course modules, 8 the practicum and 12, the research exercise.

Medicine by Coursework	Hold a primary medical degree, MBBS or its equivalent which is recognized by the Brunei Medical Board (BMB) Be licensed or registered to practice medicine in Brunei or in another country in a recognised post Have at least 24 months of experience after completion of pre-registration year (foundation year 1 and foundation year 2) Meet the minimum English qualification for UBD (IELTS 6.0) The following specialties need additional requirements to enter the programme: M.Med (Anaesthesiology) Have worked in anaesthesiology for at least 6 months (either continuously or intermittently) after registration M.Med (Critical Care Medicine) Have worked (continuously or intermittently) in Critical Care Medicine/Intensive Care Medicine for at least 6 months M.Med (General Internal Medicine) Have at least 24 months of General Internal Medicine experience of post-foundation training M.Med (Paediatrics) Have at least 12 months of Vocational Training or Basic Specialty Training in Paediatrics M.Med (Psychiatry) Hold a full-time clinical post in psychiatry and working for the Ministry of Health, Brunei
Nursing by Coursework	Hold a primary nursing degree, BSc Nursing or its equivalent which is recognized by the Brunei Nursing Board (BNB) Be licensed or registered to practice nursing in Brunei or in another country in a recognised post At least 12 months of experience in selected area of specialisation will be preferred. Public Health by Coursework	Admission to Master of Public Health programme is offered to medical doctors, dentists and candidates with first degrees in other health-related fields such as a Bachelor's degree holders in health sciences, nursing, pharmacology, nutrition and other allied health sciences or other relevant disciplines. Applicant’s relevant professional experience is considered. Applicant is required to be proficient in English and to meet UBD’s minimum English requirement for master degree entry. Applicants are required to undergo an interview on a case by case basis.
Biomedical Science by Research	An upper second or first class honours degree in relevant field of biomedical or health sciences OR a Bachelor’s degree in medicine (lower second class honours may be considered when supported with evidence of strong research interest) Meet UBD’s minimum English requirement for master degree entry
Clinical Science by Research	MBBS degree or equivalent OR an upper second or first class honours degree in any health-related discipline, or other disciplines with strong interest or experience in health sciences from a recognised institution Meet UBD’s minimum English requirement for master degree entry
Nursing by Research	An upper second or first class honours in BHSc Nursing degree at UBD or from a recognised institution Each candidate must have a license to practise through registration. Meet UBD’s minimum English requirement for master degree entry
Midwifery by Research	An upper second or first class honours in BHSc Midwifery degree at UBD or in a Bachelor’s degree in nursing with adequate maternal and child health component in the curriculum Each candidate must have a license to practise through registration. Pharmacy by Research	A Bachelor's degree in pharmacy OR an upper second or first class honours degree in any sciences or health-related discipline, or other disciplines with strong interest or experience in sciences or health sciences from a recognised institution Meet UBD’s minimum English requirement for master degree entry
Public Health by Research	An upper second or first class honours in BHSc Medicine or Nursing at UBD or in a Bachelor's degree in health sciences or health-related discipline from a recognised university Meet UBD’s minimum English requirement for master degree entry
