About Master of Public Health as Graduate Lifelong Learning Programme
The MPH programme offers relevant, high-value instruction, research and service aimed at enhancing the health of human populations. Its principal focus is on helping students acquire up-to-date generalist and specialist knowledge, skills and attitude required to effectively and efficiently address present and emerging local, regional and global public health challenges. The MPH programme has 3 main concentrations which are 'Biostatistics and Epidemiology', 'Community Health Nursing' and 'Health Promotion'.
The maximum duration of the MPH Lifelong Learning programme is 10 years.
Entry Requirement for Master of Public Health Lifelong Learning Courses
- At least 1 year working experience in any related field
- Must be able to write and speak English at an appropriate level
Graduation Requirement for Master of Public Health
The student, to be considered for award of the MPH degree, needs to obtain a total of 52 modular credits (MCs) from course modules, a practicum, and a research exercise. Of the 52 MCs, 20 are from core course modules, 12 from option course modules, 8 the practicum and 12, research exercise.

Statistical Methods in Public Health
Introduction
Statistical Methods in Public Health is one of the core modules offered in Master of Public Health programme at PAPRSB Institute of Health Sciences. It aims to equip students with the main biostatistical concepts and data analytical techniques relevant to public health. Students will have hands-on experience using statistical computer software, and also learn about statistical applications in designing and conducting a quantitative study.
Rationale
Globalisation has created trans-boundary global health issues such as poverty, obesity, diabetes mellitus, cancer, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS. Policy makers, health professionals, academics and researchers are expected to produce scientific evidence when measuring disease patterns and burden of diseases towards improving health outcomes of the population through research. Therefore, all professionals must be equipped with practical research knowledge and skills that can be applied in their respective disciplines. This course aims to introduce the main biostatistics concepts and to demonstrate the practical application in conducting quantitative studies in the field of public health. Participants will acquire knowledge and skills in designing statistical tests for quantitative research in their respective topics of interest.
The course objectives are:
- To understand the main statistical concepts and the different data analytical techniques relevant to public health;
- To develop skills in performing data analysis using statistical computer software; and
- To develop skills in applying statistical techniques in research methodology.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course, successful students should be able to demonstrate and meet the following educational outcomes:
- Describe the concepts of descriptive and inferential biostatistics.
- Describe the concepts of numerical parametric and non-parametric data analysis.
- Analyse using various univariate categorical data analytical methods.
- Analyse using various numerical data analytical methods.
- Analyse using linear and logistic regression methods (simple and multiple).
- Interpret and report analytical results.
- Perform statistical tests using R statistical software.
- Work independently and also co-cooperatively in a team.
Semester: August or January
Course Duration: 14 weeks
Award: 4 modular credit, and may progress to Master of Public Health Degree
Entry Requirements:
- At least 1 year working experience in any field
- Must be able to write and speak English at appropriate level
Prospective Applicants: This course is intended for applicants who are interested in quantitative research and would like to gain basic to intermediate skills in data analysis using R statistical software.
Module Fee: BND$700 (Installment Plan: Yes)

Principles of Epidemiology
Introduction
Principles of Epidemiology is one of the core modules offered in Master of Public Health programme at PAPRSB Institute of Health Sciences. The module covers basic epidemiology principles, concepts, procedures and its application for public health, particularly for measuring health and disease. The module provides a comprehensive understanding of epidemiological study types, and the associated strengths and weaknesses of each study. In addition, the module provides sound understanding of proper collection and interpretation of data. The module also provides knowledge on how data can be used as evidence for health promotion, protection, restoration, as well as, in disease prevention and control. This module will promote critical reading of articles and published reports.
Rationale
It is introduced to enable students to enhance skills and knowledge for both research and working in the fields of medicine and health, as well as, for addressing relevant issues at local and international settings. Globalisation has created trans-boundary global health issues such as poverty, obesity, diabetes mellitus, cancer, tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS. Policy makers, health professionals, academics and researchers are expected to produce scientific evidence through research when measuring disease patterns and burden of diseases towards improving health outcomes of the population. Therefore, all professionals must be equipped with practical research knowledge and skills that can be applied in their respective disciplines. This course aims to introduce the principles of epidemiology and to demonstrate the practical application in conducting studies in the field of public health. Participants will acquire knowledge and skills in designing research in their respective topics of interest.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course, successful students should be able to demonstrate and meet the following educational outcomes:
- Describe and apply the basic epidemiological principles and methods in investigating the distributions and determinants of health and disease.
- Critically review published epidemiologic reports.
- Describe and apply the principles and methods of screening and surveilling public health.
- Describe and apply the basic epidemiological principles and methods used in health promotion, protection, and restoration and in disease prevention and control.
- Examine how epidemiology can be relevant to public health practices and services, particularly for Brunei Darussalam.
