Crown Prince launches UBD Convocation Festival

To celebrate the 31st Convocation of Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), a Convocation Festival was launched at the Pengiran Anak Puteri Rashidah Sa’adatul Bolkiah Institute of Health Sciences (PAPRSB IHS), UBD yesterday, featuring innovative student and alumni projects.
The month-long festival was officially launched by His Royal Highness Prince (Dr) Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, and Pro-Chancellor of UBD.
His Royal Highness was greeted upon arrival by Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Abdul Mokti bin Haji Mohd Daud, Minister of Education Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Hamzah bin Haji Sulaiman, Deputy Minister of Education Datin Seri Paduka Dr Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohd Salleh, and senior government officers.
The opening ceremony was also attended by Vice-Chancellor of UBD Datin Dr Hajah Anita Binurul Zahrina binti Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Wijaya Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Abdul Aziz, as well as foreign dignitaries and prominent officials from government agencies.
This year’s Convocation Festival is showcasing nine innovative and creative projects by current and graduating students and UBD alumni, that feature constructive ideas in various fields and industries, as well as showcasing the exhibitors’ spirit and determination in helping shape the country’s future.
Organised by the Student Affairs Section of the UBD Students’ Association (PMUBD) with assistance from the Office of Promotion and Events Management (OPEM), the main exhibits include a low-cost automated medicine dispenser which can be used at home to support patients in their daily medication routine; the UBD Digital Herbarium, which is an online database of images and information on plant species; and smartphone apps featuring traditional Brunei chess (chator asli Brunei) and handloom weaving motifs (tenunan).
The opening ceremony also saw the presentation of a pesambah from the PMUBD to His Royal Highness.
A Khatam Al-Quran and Doa Kesyukuran will be held as part of the festival tomorrow, to invoke blessings on the graduating students in their future endeavours.
The Convocation Festival is held annually, during the run-up to the UBD’s Convocation Ceremony, in celebration of the achievements of UBD graduates, while also showcasing ideas and creations of the university’s current and graduating students.
The 31st Convocation Ceremony is scheduled to take place on August 22 at UBD’s Chancellor Hall, where the graduates will receive their graduation scrolls.
